This is somewhat of a cop-out prediction because we *know* GDPR will be making a big change this year. This is going to have a huge impact on the way we handle our clients data on a day-to-day basis, but what I'm interested in is the way it’ll impact our marketing.

Under this new legislation, If you obtain data through a specific campaign or a competition, you are only allowed to use that data for that exact purpose. If you wish to use that data for any other marketing purposes, you will need the express permission from the person you have collected that data from. No more spamming emails to anyone and everyone!

Not only is this going to have a huge impact on the way that we collect data for marketing, it could mean a big headache for anyone with a marketing database that was obtained via non-GDPR compliant means. ALL historic data must be GDPR compliant or you could risk a hefty fine.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this will cause a major disruption to many businesses marketing but I personally am all for it. This new legislation is giving power back to consumers, which should see them only receiving marketing materials that they’re actually interested in. In turn this should mean a better quality of lead for the business. It just means that we’re going to have to try that much harder to entice them in the first place. It’s time to get creative!
